Responding to the results of the RMI Report 2022, experts will share their perspectives on how the mining industry is doing on issues like climate, human rights, gender, working conditions, community wellbeing and environmental care.

An evidence-based assessment of 40 large-scale mining companies and 250 mine sites operating in more than 50 countries, this third RMI Report provides a snapshot of how the industry is progressing on the management of economic, environmental, social and governance (EESG) issues… and the gaps that still require more effort, both at the corporate level and at mine sites where harm prevention and risk limitation are essential to responsible mining.

Speakers:
Felicitas Fischer, ETH-NADEL (Switzerland)
João Salavessa, Lurio University (Mozambique)
Pierre De Pasquale, RMF (Switzerland)
Robert Ali Tanti, Centre for Social Impact Studies (Ghana)

Context and focus:
As the need for independent and non-corporate ESG data keeps growing, this interactive discussion will reflect on two recent tools that enable collaborative impact monitoring and engagement with mining companies, at the mine-site level. Most of mining impacts and challenges are indeed local, happening at site level.

ETH-NADEL recently launched the Resource Impact Dashboard (RID), a policy instrument that enables evidence-based monitoring and deliberation about local resource governance for all stakeholders at the mine site level – based on data from household surveys, public sources, and from mining companies.

Last year, RMF publicly launched the Mine Site Assessment Tool (MSAT), an engagement tool designed by and for local stakeholders. The tool has been actively used in several countries, including Ghana and this event will offer an opportunity to share some experience from the ground.

Published in April 2021, the ESG Due Diligence and Transparency Report on Extractive Commodity Trading shows the results of a pilot study that assesses policies and practices among a sample of 25 companies that have significant activities in the trade of oil, gas, metals or minerals.

In this session RMF will briefly present the results and learnings of this report; to provide an initial sectorial baseline by highlighting gaps and good practices seen across the industry. The session will then be open for discussion, with a panel of speakers representing different stakeholder groups commenting on the progress and the challenges of implementation of ESG standards and norms for extractive commodity trading companies.

Context:
This year’s World Water Day on 22nd March 2021 will focus on the theme ‘Valuing Water’. This focus extends beyond issues of pricing to include the environmental, social and cultural value people place on water. The mining sector has a key role to play in contributing to good global water management and supporting the objectives of the UN Sustainable Development Goals by working collaboratively with stakeholders.

By integrating broad water risks into their business model and by pro-actively collaborating with local communities, companies can demonstrate to investors their management of water risks, build trust among all stakeholders, and show respect for other water users and the ecosystems in which they operate.
